Kaiju Revamp - Guilala

Description

Now here's a monster thats near and dear to my heart but has one of the worst names ever uttered by the Japanese...Guilala. Now I dont know what that is derived from (Guirion is derived from their word for knife or guillotine so that makes since) but Guilala sounds as horrible rolling off the tongue as the monster is odd to look at. A plucked turkey with a space ship shaped head. But for all of its strangeness Ive always loved The X From Outer Space as its know here in the states.

So how did I approach this one? As usual I start with research, get to know my monster inside and out before I start playing with their anatomy. Guilala is a fungus from Mars suffused by a sentient alien energy. So I start looking up fungus, lichens, molds and spores as they will make up the texture of my beast. Then of course its time to google pictures of the kaiju itself and thats when something interesting happened. I ran across both :iconkaijusamurai: and :icondopepope: take on the bizarre critter.

Now Dope Pope's sketch and 3D modeling of what he wanted to see in an updated look were very intriguing. The kaiju is very lichen like in his sketch which I instantly dug. But his 3D model had mushroom like structures growing out from the body. I liked that idea too. So I knew I was going to follow suit with some mushrooms growing outward from it and that the strange fins on Guilala I would make to resemble lichen. But now all my idea's were just looking to much like Dope Pope and if you know me, you know I want to either do something that makes functional sense in terms of the character or to come up with something design wise that no one else drawing a particular kaiju has done before. And this led me back to Matt Frank (Kaiju Samurai for those who dont know).

Now Matt did something something strange with his Guilala. Guilala has four fingers but Matt only gave the monster 3 digits on its hands. Dont know why he chose to that but it got me to thinking about the number 3 and Mars...OMG Martian Tripods! To be fair Id also recently reread HP Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness and thinking about the Elder Things symmetry being based on 5. So I decided to do something similar here. Taking cues from HG Wells and the fact the Guilala is from Mars I based his body shape off the tripods from the Spielberg War of the Worlds film and on mostly trilateral symmetry. This is why my Revamp has 3 legs, 3 limbs (counting the tail) 3 eyes, the head has 3 planes and even the beak is now in 3 sections. Its a pretty radical departure from the original but I like tying this into War of the Worlds and that the Martians might have based their fearsome machines on Guilala. Hell maybe he's why they fled Mars for Earth, lol.

Well hope you enjoy the new Revamp and expect more in the future.

Where did you get the idea for the third leg?
