Kaiju Revamp - Jet Jaguar by Bracey100 Kaiju Revamp - Jet Jaguar by Bracey100
First mecha kaiju for the series which will also appear in the KMAC kaiju contest for this month. I will start by saying that machines are not my thing. I can draw organic forms all day long without any reference if I dont want to use any. Doing anything organic is essentially just knowing about certain anatomical structures and rules like "form follows function". Not that I dont draw impossible creatures when I want, because it is fun to break the rules, but mostly I like my creatures to have some sort of real world basis.

Now here's the rub, I know dick about machines. I practically have an aversion to them. If I didnt need to use a computer to work I wouldnt. If someone gets all Star Trek and invents a teleporter, Im selling my car that day. That said some of you noticed right away the elements of my sketch for this guy were VERY derivative or certain well known characters or designs. I rely pretty heavily on reference initially cause tech stuff that I do from scratch looks so bad to me. Once Ive got my sketch down Im finally free to start innovating and making things my own. For Jet I studied movie Iron Man, movie Green Goblin and a host of other tech/mech designs. I decided JJ would have nanofiber musculature supported by an internal skeleton and covered by overlapping shifting plates of metal for mobility. JJ after all fights using martial arts techniques and needs to be fluid. Having no other weapons in the film (Godzilla vs Megalon) than his fists and feet I didnt have to worry about weaponry. Which was too bad, I would have liked to have done some War Machine style gear but that goes against his film appearance (he wasnt made specifically for fighting, just ended up doing so). And just for an extra splash of fun I added some little glowies as indicator lights so hs creator can monitor how stressed parts of his system are getting as he battles.

This was both one of the easier (tech is actually faster to render that scales and skin textures) and harder pieces to do. The coloring took a while because of all the shininess (ESPECIALLY the silver parts). So there he is all done and I hope everyone enjoys him.

You're not the only one that fails at drawing machines, I would prefer to do entire pages with Godzill and friends then a mech.
But regardless of that, very cool design for Jet Jaguar, much more mechanical then his movie form, and about that I still don't get it why he appeared in only one movie ? But I guess you can say the same thing about other Toho monsters.

He would appear in a Godzilla tv series including there being a JJ that was for fighting fires and on that was a medical bot. Dont remember what the show was called at the moment though.

Live action, I looked around and found the title, Godzilla Island. It was a show for kids.

I really like this guy's design, but the face looks super evil - I don't know if that was intentional.

xD yeah, I suppose a grin would look a little weird on a fighting robot.

Why not go with that stoic face that sentai masks all seem to have?

Im not entirely against the grin, just wanted to make it far less goofy. Given his primary color scheme Im ok with him smiling a bit.

I really like this, both contemporary and still very much based on the old design. One small criticism is that JJ is pure machine, not a guy in armor, and this looks like it could be a guy in armor. Makes sense with Iron Man and Green Goblin being your biggest inspirations, but i'd take this and maybe accentuate the fiber chords, or have spaces where you can see that a person couldn't fit (like having thin joints or the like). To this same end maybe make the eyes lighter so that it's easier to tell that they aren't lenses but indents in the metal.

Sorry! Messed up on the formatting with this, and posting again!

From :iconkaijuden:

:iconearthbaragon: says: As always you have an interesting way of revamping a particular subject. Sometimes the design is much different, while others are more homage-like. This would be in the 'homage' group I would say. The basic shape of 'JJ' is there, but it’s a much more modern style. This is logical, cause technology has come a long way since the early 70‘s. In the 50's a box shaped gray thing would be considered high-tech looking. In the 60’s and 70’s it was more smoothed out and made to resemble more simplified and rounded human like figures. Nowadays you got the Iron Man syndrome. And this would be a prime example of that. And I appreciate that. I like the added lights and the detail in the body is really great. Same goes for the ropes of cables that act in his joints. All in all it is a great line work, coupled with nicely executed shadows and highlights. Great job.

:iconenshohma: says: the modernization of Jet Jaguar here is very well done, with tons of added details that could still work in a physical suit form, if Toho ever chooses to allow the funky robot to rise again. Also, as stated in your own description (which I do read sometimes and beforehand), robots ARE hard to render, even simplistic ones like JJ here! We'll try to stick to organic Kaiju characters in future art jams, and if we do robots, we'll try to focus on Androids and Cyborgs instead - quite a bit of those in both categorizes, by-the-way.

The challenge for me was to keep the forms of the rubber sut and make something sleek and modern out of it. I think I succeeded and yeah, the various Iron Man movie armors were a constant source of inspiration while I worked on this. If I were to break this down youd see a core Terminator style skeleton covered with the fiber musculature and finally skinned over with his armor shell. Thanks for the praise and observations!

Yeah I thought it best to maintain a form that could still work as suitmation when doing this, hell so many pros troll DA why not Toho? I might get lucky! And please feel free to continue adding mecha to the jams. I want to stretch as an artist so drawing things that are difficult for me are a must.

Well, next month might be dedicated to Gorgo and his bigger momma Ogra, but I'll be posting up a poll to see who's truly next in the Kaijuden art jams.

BUT...I can always offer some mecha suggestions if you'd like ;)

And I am the Kaiju expert, so what ever your in the mood for drawing, let me know, and I can find the character in question.

Than there's obvious suggestions like Mothra, Hedorah, Gamera, Ultraman (the dude's a metallic alien, so far from a robot) and so on, and so forth!

So many kaiju to choose from! I find each one to be a fun challenge in their own right, I shall not shirk from any suggestion. I determined to continue the Revamp project for as long as I live. Just got 1 comish (currently) to finish before I can get back to it.
