Kaiju Revamp - Rodan by Bracey100 Kaiju Revamp - Rodan by Bracey100
This one was done at the request of :iconkingovrats: and I hope he likes it cause like my Megalon and Anguirus this one leaves a lot of the original film monster behind for some new ideas conceptually. First off, this was a real battle getting this one started. When I start these only a few require mumerous sketching and re-sketching to get the design going. How the hell do you redesign Rodan without A. Making him look exactly like film Rodan. B. Makin him look like a giant pterodactyl or C. Making hm look like something Matt Frank (and other artists) has already done? Originality can be a daunting thing to pursue but I was determined to do something with this kaiju no one else had done before (and I did a google search to make sure). So at the risk of alienating all Rodan fans across the work I tapped into modern paleontology and present you with Feathered Rodan!!!! The inspiration came from realizing the Showa Rodan's head in fact looks very bird-like and he's got these weird bits of his wings that look like leathery feathers, so I ran with the idea.

Scientist have been pushing the idea of feathers on dinosaurs a lot in recent years and Ive noticed that a lot of artists have adopted this idea. I decided that in this instance I would too. Now to be honest the classic Rodan is my favorite look. He's huge and powerful and can still F'ing fly! Fire Rodan is rather wimpy in comparison but skews more like an actual flying dino, Rodan Final Wars is a solid combo of both looking more like Classic but with Fire's color scheme. I ended up using elements from all three for my design plus referring to the pterodactyl as well.

I wanted a design that would be powerful in the air and on land in battle but something that looked like it might actually fly as well. I studied the build of various pterodactyls and found their bodies to be too weak for combat of the kaiju sort but I recalled how effective these things were in JP 3 vs Dr Grant and Co, pecking and stabbing with there nearly all beak heads. I decided to keep that idea and gave my Rodan a large head in relation to his body with a vicious beak to match. I also gave him an enormous chest to power his wings in flight and battle (wing bashes are no joke...ever been attacked by a swan?). He also has very robust legs and claws like those of an eagle with the killing claw being the one on the back toe. Its the one in raptor birds that does the killing, being driven into the victim like a knife. Like Showa Rodan he has huge and muscular arms as well lending him a sense of strength and power. All four of these limbs will also allow him to move in a dragon style stance with similar speed, agility and power for ground combat. A stance I prefer to the penguin waddle Rodan sometimes executes.

Rodan has always had ventral plates of body armor (good defense for ground combat) so I kept this element and also spines on his front. I got to thinking about how this should work and decided that his spines are modified feathers without fletching, in effect becoming quills like those of a porcupine. Anyone getting inside Rodan's reach is in for one hell of a painful hug! Not to mention the pecking, biting and clawing! His wing claws/hands are structured like a spinosaurus with the outter most claw being the largest and most powerful. Lastly I wanted to color him like Showa Rodan but gave his plumage the Fire Rodan treatment. Top is all off with and eagle's eye and a violet tongue just because and there you have my take on Rodan.

Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs, and they did not have feathers, but a very light fuzz. I think you more ended up creating a re-design of the Giant Claw here (it's as big as a battleship).

I know that but this is my interpretation of something THAT DOESNT EXIST. Besides I already did a Giant Claw: bracey100.deviantart.com/art/K…

It doesn't exist, but pterosaurs and dinosaurs did. Allow me to grab some quotes from your description where it seems to me that you did NOT know what I explained.

"Scientist have been pushing the idea of feathers on dinosaurs" - pterosaurs are not dinosaurs

"an actual flying dino"

"I tapped into modern paleontology" - not directly stating it, but you're saying you're drawing from science and the fossil record, except you're not, because you're confusing dinosaurs with pterosaurs

It's not about whether the monster exists, it's about your claim of using paleontology in this design.

I did use references from paleontology.

("Scientist have been pushing the idea of feathers on dinosaurs" - pterosaurs are not dinosaurs) And not once did I claim they were, this was a broad statement. But I did use ideas from paleontology for this design. There are elements of dinosaurs as well as pterosaurs in this work you pompous ass. Just LOOK at it, but no. Youre trying to be to "intelligent" to even notice.

But since you need to feed you ego as some sort of pain in the ass know it all you can kindly kiss my ass as Im putting you on ignore. Youre taking this WAY to seriously and I dont have the time to deal with your trolling.

Not bad, very cool redesign of Rodan, I like that you tried to combine the different looks of all three of Rodan's forms in the movies and looks absolutely awesome. I also like that you somehow went also with a bit of logic in this redesign proces, which is something I don't really see quit that often. And even do I prefer Rodan's classic/Final Wars forms, this is still awesome !

I try to incorporate as much biological logic into my designs as possible. I like to approach fantasy with a realistic aesthetic if I can.

So why did Rodan give his life to save Godzilla? It was never really explained in the movie Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2.

Pterosaurs are not dinosaurs, and so they didn't have feathers, but they did have hair-like integument that may be homologous with dinosaur feathers. Rodan could be a bit fuzzy!

The also didnt have spiked chests and grow to 180 feet in height, so I have no issues working him the way I did. I wasnt doing a literal translation into a pterosaur, I just referenced some of their features and mixed in the current idea of dinosaurs having feathers.

Rodan, Godzilla and Angisarus were my three favourite giant monsters :) you've done this perfectly. I love how he's a mix of bird and reptile, vicious, lean and bloodthirsty. Totally sweet :)

Thanks very much, I know feathered dinos are controversial (I in fact prefer mine sans feathers) but I really wanted to hit on an angle that no one else had considered for Rodan.

I like my dinosaurs unfeathered too, but I think your dislike of feathers worked for the best in this. the feathers enhance Rodan's features, just the way they're positioned on his body and how they seem to work well with his more reptilian features.

Thanks very much, Im working on Godzilla 1954 currently (yes, I'll be doing at least one more Godzilla besides 54). Rodan was my most challenging project yet in terms of coming up with an original design which still something of Rodan's look to it.

i like the design overall. im not a fan of feathered dinosaurs no matter how that's the scientific evidences are heading towards to, maybe its because i have biases over dinosaurs as reptiles.

what i like about radon's feathers is it add a mythological/supernatural feeling to it.

faved!

Thanks for the fave friend! Like you Im not supporter of the feather dino thing but Im always trying to do something with these revamps that I havent seen others do. The idea was also inspired by the fact that the first Rodan some very bird like characteristics ironically. The beak, neck and head areas as well as some almost feather like structures to the original wing closest to the torso. I couldnt make sense of those. Why had the creators done that, but from there the muse took over. But because I choose to take the colors of Fire Rodan and incorporate the as part of the feathers my Rodan takes on some phoenix like characteristics. Funny how it wasnt my intention for this to happen but its impossible to notice now that the piece is finished as your pointing out proves.

Also I cant wait to see your model of the 94 Godzilla youve been working on.

Yes, i also was thinking of that bird like radon, i saw somewhere. its a solid design, good job!

The feathers also are great to have a visual play on 'fire' like flaming feathers.

havent started on 94 yet. im excited to get crackin on it.

Normally I'm all for "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"-
But wow. This is fantastic! Talk about making something good better! This is one of the most original designs for a flying kaiju I've ever seen! And it still captures Rodan! Good job, sir! :D

Thank you for the incredibly high praise! The further I go into this series the more chances I getting willing to take as after it has no bearing on what Toho, Sony or Legendary Pictures is likely to do with these properties. And trying to do something original while still keeping enough of the original is a razor's edge for certain. Im so glad youve enjoyed my personal take on Rodan.
