Mr Happy for those of you who don't know is my main OC hero of my personal comic book universe. For decades (yes decades) I've wanted to do comics with him but for various reasons haven't. In fact, since I first drew him in 1988 I've only drawn him out a total of 9 times (including this image) that I can recall. One idea I've been toying with for a long time was to have Mr Happy recreating some of the most iconic comic book covers/images of all time. It seemed only appropriate I started with the first superhero of them all, Superman. I've been working on this on the side a little bit at a time for months now but after my most recent commission I decided to push through and finish this off as I just needed to do something for myself. Don't get me wrong I love doing all this art for others (you've got to if you are going to be a professional artist) but I needed some "me time" to recharge the old batteries. Feels good.

In case your wondering the villain featured in this piece is called Clown Car, a multiple personality with the ability split off his personalities into individuals, each with their own unique super power! He may have as many as 100 personalities ta boot! He's a fun and interesting villain to write and draw (I love clowns). When I've more time I want to introduce you guys to the Happyverse and give full images, biographies and power listings of the characters populating my world. Also, more homage cover to come in the future.

Yep, I made him up for a rpg back in 1988 while in my first year of college. The game was Champions, even though personally I prefered playing the Marvel Super Heroes RPG.

Firstly thanks for the kind words. Im glad to see my OCs getting so much love. Im working very hard right now to get a Mr Happy comic produced. Ive got over 200 heroes and villains developed and have dont art for about 40 of them so far (which I'll be sharing this year).

Now you ask a VERY interesting question, not how but WHY did I make Mr Happy and Clown Car as well as who inspired me which will inform some of the answers to the former question.

First Im a total goofball. Ive got a weird sense of humor and it gets expressed in a lot of things Im involved in. Mr Happy was created in 1988 as a character for the pen and paper rpg Champions while I was in college. He basically had classic super powers (strength, flight, durability) but with my wacky sense of humor. Over time as I started putting more of my actual self into the character his powers evolved, he became a shape shifter with cartoon physics and some slight reality warping thanks to inspiration from characters like Plastic Man, The Mask, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Morph, E-Man and Slapstick to name a few.

Writers/comics that were inspiring me at the time include Keith Giffen (Ambush Bug), Christopher Golden (Quantum and Woody), Slapstick, The Tick and The Mask. These books and authors sent me into the direction of parody and for years I was developing the Mr Happy comic as a superhero farce. This was going to be easy to do because it was the 90s now and the Dark Age of comics has settled in and frankly I hated them. All that grim and gritty overly tormented character BS got on my nerves so I wanted to make something that was fun.

In the early 2000's I became chronically ill and one of my few escapes from my constant pain was playing rpgs with my friends. Our GM had a very grim and gritty world and I put Mr Happy smack dab in the middle of it. For a few years he became the source of hope and inspiration in a comic book rpg that was rife with terrorism and war and this has led to this final incarnation of Mr Happy.

My goal with the comic is to put him into a real world with real consequences and yet recapture some of that Golden age fun as the story moves forward. As for Clown Car, you just gotta have a clown or two I saw. He's my bad clown. I think my good clown is going to be called Trickery. I really liked the visual idea of Mr Happy fighting clowns though and so that became the impetus for his creation.

OMG I was just thinking about Plaz. Plastic Man is in my top, like, 50 characters of all time. YOu are really interesting, backstory-wise and OC-wise and everythingelseever-wise. My backstory was that the first comic I ever made was that I glued a bunch of pictures of Santa (I never believed in him. I was too concerned about the Kringlebunny taking my gifts so that my New Year resolution would become true XD) to a bunch of stapled-together papers. The most interesting thing about my comic-ness is that I made a character named Superboy with all of the exact same powers as the DC Comics one, three months before I found out who the character was when I was seven XD Also TYSM for the sneak peak! I think the fishing pole and shark repellent is hilarious! Never Not Keep Drawing!

Heh now thats some interesting and entertaining stuff right there. The Superboy thing is particularly funny but it happens. Ive got a size changing hero called Size Does Matter Size Does Matter and to make him different from guys like the Atom and Giant Man I decided to give him an armored suit. So what does DC do just a short while later, give the Atom an armored suit on tv...sheesh.

Thanks for all the high praise, its appreciated. Mr Happy will always try and keep up his sense of bravado through humor no matter how grim the situation, so expect lots of hijinks and pranks galore.

Here's the really sad thing, I did stop drawing, once for about 10 years. I became convinced Id never earn a living as an artist, I let others talk me out of pursuing it. And now here I am almost 50 years old and I have to compete with people half my age in the market not to mention that if Id never stopped Id be a far better artist than I am now. Its a huge regret, so if you want to do this sort of thing, dont ever stop. even if you can only do it as a hobby for a long time keep at it and improve your skills. I cant go back a relive my life, I can only push ahead and do the best I can.

WHY FOR TEN YEARS WHAT NO THAT IS INSPIRING BUT STILL NO LOOK AT STAN LEE HE'S OLDER BY LIKE DECADES AND HE IS IN EVERY MARVEL MOVIE EVER MADE. Wait, have you seen Logan? Is he in that one? Please tell me, I'm not 18 yet and it's rated R. Mostly because of all the language, use of alcohol, death, violence, nudity, and FEAKIN' WOLVERINE, but, hey, when in Rome, right? THANKS SO MUCH. But seriously, don't stop for a decade. Ever. No offense, but what were you thinking? There will always be someone better than everyone. Everyone will be dissing everyone else who is BETTER THAN THEM. If you were worse, why would they tell you to stop? You're FREAKIN' BRACEY100. Mr. Smiley was your guy, wait do you put a space in between a period if it's in a name? Like Mr.Smiley or Mr. Smiley? Mr. Scary was yours, Super Coward was yours, the hilarious team of Cornucopia was yours, (bracey100.deviantart.com/art/S…) to name a few! GOSH I'm only 14 a decade is almost a half of my life! Man if I could relive my life... Wait, would I have knowledge of my life so far? That way I could have like eight years of drawing in my head. MAN I WOULD FREAK EVERYONE OUT ON HOW INSANE MY SKILLS WOULD BE AS AN INFANT. Just to go crawl around and draw the nurse after my Mom gives birth to me, man that's gonna be creepy. XD MAN YOU ARE AWESOME and I use caps lock too much.

Nope Stan's not in Logan. He doesn't always make a cameo, at least not in the Marvel films by Sony or Fox. But Im pretty sure he is in all the Disney/Marvel Studios films.

Dont worry, I dont plan on stopping. Im just gonna put Mr Happy out there no matter what. If it becomes a hit and I make money great but if not it doesnt matter, I still NEED to tell his story. Of all my creations he is my favorite and the one Ive invested the most time and energy into. He's here to stay. Also there is no period in Mr Happy, Mr Scary or Mr Yuck. I have not made a Mr Smiley. Heh, Im gonna have to draw Cornucopia soon!

LOL! Ok that last bit about you crawling around drawing right after birth is one of the funniest thoughts ever put into my head. And no worries, capslock doesnt bother me. I love your enthusiasm.

HAHAHA yeah. I just saw "Mr" and my mind automatically puts a period after it, like in formal text. I think Google Docs has like eleven fonts where it automatically puts periods after "Mr"'s. Cornucopia sounds like it's gonna be hilarious. Also, yes, that thought is hilarious. And somewhat disturbing. Mainly disturbing. I've seen like every good horror movie (The Boy isn't like the commercials, if you ever see/saw it. You know, about the woman babysitting the doll? It gets more disturbing than paranormal.) HAHAHA why did I even start talking about horror... Have you ever tried drawing in someone else's art style, or just really different than yours, see what you like about this new style, and try to put it in your own? THAT'S WHY. That's why Bruce Timm's art has changed so much.

I love horror movies myself, I even make some (check out my youtube:www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNW_gA…). I saw The Boy, it was very good until the third act when to me it became a second rate slasher movie. Before that is was a great thriller. I also reccoment Dont Breathe.

I have on rare occasions experimented with other styles including manga and Frank Miller's Sin City style.

But my regular art style is very Classic Marvel I would say.

Funnily enough, no it doesn't. :) If you read the interview...

"How long has the character been around in your life?

JB: I created the Captain when I was in 7th grade."

But my point is more that the characters were surprisingly similar than anything else.

I wonder when 7th grade was for him? I made Mr Happy in 1988 in my first year in college for a super hero rpg I was playing.

Check this out for a coincidence, Ive run across another artist with a similar character concept here who developed his OC with no knowledge of Captain Smiley or Mr Happy.
